There have been some rumors circulating regarding Lake Wackena and our plan of attack to prevent an algae disaster like we experienced this past year. Perhaps we can shed some light on the truth of the matter.

The folks from Foster’s Lake and Pond Management have developed an aggressive treatment schedule for the 2014 calendar year beginning in April at the start of the growing season. Their plan takes them through August at which time the likelihood of such a bloom is diminished based on the effects of the early treatment.

We are also looking at possibly allowing the crew from Foster’s to do some dredging in certain areas of the lake but it is based on budget concerns as much as anything else. Given a choice of addressing only one aspect of lake management this year, we think all residents would agree the reduction of algae would be ranked higher than dredging. That said, both issues will be actively pursued in the coming months.

As for rumor control, we anticipate lowering Lake Wackena for only one month (January) this year and only 2-3 feet (about half of what we normally lowering it) just to allow some minor seawall repairs and primarily to allow residents to rake some of the decaying vegetation from the lake bottom near their properties. There will be no dredging occurring during the lake lowering.

Residents should feel free to address your concerns to me regarding the condition of the lakes. Also remember there is a Lake Committee that meets the third Wednesday of each quarter at 7:00 PM. The meeting is always open to the public and the members  welcome your input.

The Village of Walnut Creek surrounds two large lakes and a top-rated golf course in the eastern part of Wayne County, North Carolina. Although Walnut Creek is a relatively new community, the tall pines, the majestic oaks and the flowering dogwoods give evidence that the beauty of the area has existed for many years.

Approximately 360 families enjoy the peace and tranquility of the village. There are only a few businesses within the corporate limits of the village and Walnut Creek is truly a neighborhood community.

The residents of the village elect a village council to govern the community. Danny Jackson presides over the council meetings as Mayor of Walnut Creek. Greg Ricker is Mayor Pro Tem. Lou Cook is the Village Administrator and Sharon Geelen serves the council as Clerk. The Police Department ensures a safe and secure community.

If you'd like to contact the Village directly, please fill this form out and we will get back with you as soon as possible.
